The wall separating the kitchen from the rest of the ground floor was removed to re-connect the kitchen to the living and dining areas.  A large island offers integrated wine storage, seating, and a place to gather while preparing meals. A strip of
  A geometric yellow tile backsplash adds a saturated pop of colour, and picks up on the brass glow of the inside finish of the island pendant lights. New windows were added to the back facade to bring in light and offer views to the back yard.

  A built-in bench and storage area is tucked beside the backdoor, creating a subtle landing place when entering from the backyard.
  Modern details in the design reference existing elements in the home. A minimal, simplified railing to the basement  stair takes its cues from the Victorian railing on the stair to the second floor.
  Marble hex tile meets the white oak floor at the island, to create a flush, seamless transition between materials.
  A new back deck integrates a barbeque, dining area, and bin storage below. Located just off the kitchen, it creates a physical and visual connection between the interior and the exterior.
